Time Management Tips for Work at Home Moms
A Quick Guide Busy Business Moms by LaShanda Henry
Between the kids, the toys, the television and the hubby, finding the time and place to get work done can be a challenge. However, with a little ingenuity and a few time management tricks any busy mom can easily become more productive. If you can take the time to develop a realistic schedule for yourself, you’ll find that you will save time in the long run.
Location, location, location! Every good business starts off with a great location. Plopping your laptop and papers on the living room table in bird’s eye view of the kids and the television simply will not do. A noisy, cluttered work space will clutter your mind for sure. Every work at home mom needs an office or at least a corner you can turn into office space. When a closed door isn’t an option, use headphones to keep you focused. Getting a desk and full back swivel chair is also important. Working at home often requires long hours in front of your computer and that can take a toll on your body. Get a bad back, neck, or wrist injury and you could be out of commission for weeks, so avoid losing time by taking the time to create a quiet workspace with an ergonomic workstation.
The next step is to plan your power hour! Some people work best in the morning, while others thrive during the late night hours. When do you work best and can someone else watch the kids during that time? Ideally, every work at home mom can find at least six hours of quiet time to work. Unfortunately, life isn’t always perfect, so that’s when you’ve got to be creative. Whether you choose on dad, grandma, a play date, baby-sitter, or school, you’ll need to find someone or something to focus on the kids for you, so that you can focus on your work without distractions.
To make the most of your power hours, consider bulk tasking your projects. For example, if you have to write an article every day, consider writing a series of articles in one day, to free up your time later. Think about things you do on a frequent basis and figure out how you can use bulk tasking to lighten up your schedule. Moreover, think about all your projects and divide them into three categories; things you can complete in one day, one week, and one month. Map out time periods where you give yourself start dates and deadlines, so you can finish your tasks and feel more accomplished during your work day. Taking the time to create a good schedule for yourself now, will increase your productivity in the future.
